“You are about to do something
wonderful” is the unspoken gospel
everyone knows. Not something
big, outlandish, a big production
but the smaller miracles of hearing
and seeing, the gift of a smile to strangers,
the pause in a conversation
to let what is unexpected in. We’ve
been bamboozled by the word
“wonderful” too long. We’ve forgotten
that “wonder” is “a feeling of surprise
mingled with admiration, caused by
something beautiful, unexpected,
unfamiliar or inexplicable.” Who
cannot follow a gospel as explicit as that?
